Eames Style RAR Chairs
In 1948, Charles and Ray Eames won 2nd prize in the ‘International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design’, organised by the New York Museum of Modern Art, with a chair designed with a seat moulded to fit the contours of the human body and the ability to be used with a variety of bases.
With the revolutionary use of fibreglass, previously unknown in the furniture industry, they successfully developed the moulded seat shells for mass production. The organically shaped, one-piece shell was instantly a much-admired innovation at a time when chairs generally consisted of a separate seat and backrest.
Charles and Ray Eames introduced a variety of bases to be combined with these shells – the ‘Eiffel’ base made of welded steel wire, the wooden base reinforced with metal struts and the RAR rocker base. This revolutionary combination of seat shells and bases gave the world a chair family that is still instantly recognisable today.
The Eames arm chairs and side chairs went on sale in 1950 and in the decades since have become one of the best known furniture designs of the twentieth century.
Our Eames style RAR chairs faithfully follow the lines of the original design and are made from injection moulded ABS plastic in place of the original and somewhat brittle fibreglass. This provides a robust seat and a uniform colour and finish. The rocker base is made from chromed steel and beech wood. The beech wood is also available with a walnut stain.
Eames style arm chairs and side chairs are a timeless design and look great in almost any setting imaginable – Around the dining table, as individual pieces in the sitting room or bedroom, in the office, in bars, cafe’s and restaurants, reception areas… anywhere.
